William George Morgan (January 23, 1870 – December 27, 1942) was the inventor of volleyball, originally called "Mintonette", a name derived from the game of badminton which he later agreed to change to better reflect the nature of the sport.

In Tudor Britain the Bible was an important part of everyday life. It was often the only text that most ordinary people would have seen. William's work gave the Welsh people easy access to biblical teachings and created a standard version of written Welsh for the first time.

He came to realize he needed a certain type of competitive recreational game in order to vary his program. Basketball suited young people but seemed to be too fast paced for many participants. At that time, Morgan knew of no similar game to volleyball that could guide him.

Morgan married a Cuban, Olga María Rodríguez Farinas, also a revolutionary, and they had two daughters.
